When you visit Lawhorn & Associates, one of the professional ladies up front hands you a short form to fill out to help the Lawhorn staff get to know you. Well, it's only fair that we offer you a glimpse into our charming little personalities in return. Of course, we can't reveal everything—in fact, we're tempted to misappropriate the client confidentiality clause to protect ourselves—but these little tidbits could be the start of a thrilling relationship between you and us. Ah, it's like internet dating without having to get dressed up for a fancy-shmancy introductory dinner. Bon Appetite!
Ashleigh Carithers
The Rat in Ratatouille Comes to Mind A major disconnect between businesses and their accountants occurs at the bookkeeping level. Everyday business bookkeeping is not often concerned with the kind of financial reporting required to elicit a loan or file a tax return. When an accountant finally touches the records, it may be difficult to parse out which debit or credit fits into which category. As a result, many businesses end up with faulty financials and tax returns not because of an accounting issue itself, but only because of a communication problem.
Lawhorn & Associates set out to eliminate that communication gap when it acquired Bookkeeping Essentials as a division in 2008. Bookkeeping Essentials places small business bookkeeping firmly in the arena it should have been in all along: the accountant’s. Now businesses can find an outsource point for their accounting and (traditionally in-house) bookkeeping under one roof.
Ashleigh Carithers is the face and voice clients most associate with Bookkeeping Essentials. She has been with that company since 2006, before it was acquired by Lawhorn & Associates. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Johnson & Wales University as a chef, and she’s been cooking the books ever since.
Ashleigh has two fantastic daughters, Olivia (6) and Zoe (4), that keep her busy and entertained. In her spare time, Ashleigh has been known to love the thrill of day hiking in Bhutan, camping in Mt. Ranier National Park, or pretty much anything that involves being outdoors. She also enjoys going to movies and spending time with friends and family. You would never know it by looking at her, but she is a cooking fanatic and loves to test her creations on her girls. She actually used to have three girls, but we won’t get into that story.
Beverly Linkous
A Busy Beverly
Beverly joined forces with us in 2008 along with two of her team members, Lindsay Green and Dee Dee Card. Having owned and operated her own businesses, Beverly is quite the expert at putting the polish on a financial.
Beverly graduated from both Roane State and Tennessee Wesleyan College in the same year, 1991. She earned her CPA a year later for the State of Tennessee. You can see why we know she’ll get it done no matter what the project.
A true accountant, Beverly found an inexpensive way to nourish her gemstone and precious metal fetish when she married jeweler John Linkous. Together, they had four solid gold children whose names are Ruby, Opal, Sapphire, and Jake. Just kidding—we have no idea what their names are, because she keeps them in a vault.
Beverly’s main hobby is trying to figure out what her hobby should be. She claims to be “developing hobbies,” though we’re not exactly sure how to describe how one goes about that. “I would perform if I could,” she explains. She admits to enjoying reading and ice cream, which helps identify the source of the chocolate fingerprints on the pages of the books we’ve lent her. Besides that, she likes all kinds of music and margaritas. She wanted us to give a shout out to her dog, Tucker, which we suppose must be a whiz at computers and surfing the net. But she doesn’t care about this plethora of knowledge we’ve just shared with you. “Just make me sound skinny,” was her only heartfelt request. Accordingly, please be aware that this is only a temporary biography of Beverly, since we haven’t been able to collect enough data on how skinny people sound to meet her demands. But based on the current trends, we would like to report that Beverly’s voice is quite nasally.
Brian Patrick
Want Some Fly Eyes With That?
No business can
expect to thrive in the future without hiring staff that embodies the
future, and L&A is no exception. Tomorrow’s returns here directly
correlate with our investment in today’s upcoming generations.
This is not to say a
young person should be chosen on the age factor alone. If an employee
can be deemed an investment, the greatest returns spring from the
quickest and most versatile among interns.
Brian Patrick is one
such sharp intern L&A chose for continued employment. Having graduated from UT's MAC program, he now works full time at L&A not only on your accounting problems but on making himself invaluable (at which he's doing a fine job). His CPA is right around the corner. His office computer, as an illustration, now has four screens. It is believed that his eyes will evolve toward a composite structure by 2030.
Brian loves football, fishing, and one other activity that starts with
F…oh yeah, feeding himself. (And you thought we were going to say,
“fashion modeling”, didn’t you?) Pizza, hamburgers, and ice cream are a
few of the delicacies with which his palate is frequently enamored,
especially when they’re cheap (that’s the natural accountant in him).
But if you had to narrow it down, corn mazes are his absolute favorite.
Doesn’t the future look bright?
Brittanie Gilliland
She Better Slow That Mustang Down
Lawhorn & Associates prides itself on good intra-departmental communication, particularly when it involves the administrative department. The full responsibilities of the admin group would be too long and tedious (and boring) to list here, but suffice it to say that they are involved on a number of levels in the production of tax returns and financials.
Lawhorn management has recently facilitated that communication ever further with the addition of Brittanie Gilliland. Brittanie is an accounting student working towards her Master’s, and as such she handles some accounting work; but she is also a full fledged member of the admin team, which puts her in the position to help with final processing on tax returns and financials, client setup, and billing. We dare not keep up with all she does in one day.
Brittanie studies at ETSU and maintains a 3.5 there despite her other chores and duties outside of school. Yes, really, we just used the chore word. That’s because she lives in the Cherokee National Forest on a horse farm. And chores happen there. We’re talking CHORES, people. And we know what you’re thinking: yes, she drives a gazillion miles a day from home to school to work and back.
In addition to all the other crap she takes care of (and we mean that both figuratively and literally), Brittanie gives horseback riding lessons to women looking to develop their calf muscles and men seeking to diminish their potential to reproduce. Both she and her husband, Aaron, offer carriage rides for special occasions. Her farm animals assist her in making ice cream. No, really, we’re not making this up: we heard it from the horse’s mouth.
