Anytime a business changes the way
it generates services or products, the critical question of “how” comes
into play. Grand schemes of new operations lacking specific processes
are like cars without engines.
When
L&A hired Doug Hathaway, nobody knew how invaluable he would prove
in the pursuit of a paperless environment. Doug’s more than 10 years
accounting experience included tax preparation, OIC, managerial
reporting, computer/management information systems, purchasing, and
scheduling. But it is the focus for his MBA, Production Operations,
that has become the catalyst for numerous process improvements. After
offering a few too many good ideas, he got stuck with the management of
our accounting routines.
Doug
was raised in Idaho, where his family had a small logging operation and
farm (potatoes presumably, although he hasn’t confessed the full
details). In 1987, he fulfilled a personal mission for his church in
Japan, where he learned the indigenous language and culture, an asset
that has well served both Doug and the Lawhorn team. From Idaho State
University he earned a BA in Finance and his MBA.
Doug
enjoys weightlifting, racquetball, and foosball. With his wife, Dawnya,
and son, Kolten, he visits museums and national sites of interest, and
plays soccer, chess, and video games. What he does outside of their
company and ours he has yet to divulge, but we have some pretty good
ideas.
